Krompecher competition

The Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology at the Medical and Health Science Center, University of Debrecen announces an inner-school competition for General Medicine and Dentistry students.

The aim of the competition:

We would like to stimulate the students for attaining knowledge in modern functional morphology (Anatomy, Histology, Embryology, Neuroanatomy, Neurohistology) at the highest possible level, and also keep the memory of the late professor István Krompecher, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences fresh. István Krompecher (1905-1983) was the head of the Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology for 25 years (1950-1975). He was a charismatic teacher and internationally recognized scientist.

Call for competition:

The competition is open for those General Medicine and Dentistry students of the University of Debrecen who received a grade of 4 or 5 on the Anatomy, Histology and Embryology final exam, as well as on Neuroanatomy and Neurohistology in the academic year preceding the deadline for the submission of applications.

Students who enter the competition have to prepare a competition-essay. The essay is supposed to be written by one author, and a student can submit only one work. The theme of the essay is freely chosen by the applicant from the main research areas of the Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology (Neurobiology or Connective Tissue Biology). Concerning its format, the essay should be a review of the literature that summarizes the most up-to-date knowledge of the chosen topic in 20 to 40 pages (A4 format, double space, character size: 12). The language of the essay can be Hungarian or English.

The cover page should contain:

- Heading: Essay for the István Kropecher Prize
- The title of the review
- The name, year, group number, faculty of the author
- The year of the competition

The structure of the essay:

- Summary (not more than one page)
- Introduction (importance of the topic, aim of the review)
- Summary of the literature (freely composed by the Author in a logical structure with illustrations and citations of the literature. Illustrations can be selected from scientific papers, textbooks or internet. The origin of the illustration should be identified with complete references.)
- List of references that are quoted in the essay.

The competition-essay should be submitted in 3 copies to the Secretariat of the Department of Anatomy, Histology & Embryology.

Deadline: 31. December

Evaluation procedure:

The competition-essays will be reviewed by three referees invited by the Head of the Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology. The referees will evaluate both the form and the content of the work in two month, and submit their evaluation to the Head of the Department. At the end of the review the reviewer should clearly state whether the essay meets, or does not meet the requirements of the competition.

If, on the basis of the judgment of the referees, the essay meets the requirement of the competition, the Author should present his/her work in a lecture on the „István Krompecher Student Scientific Workshop” organized by the Department. The lectures will be followed by scientific discussion, and the presentations will be evaluated and ranked by a board consisting of 5 senior scientists. At the end of the Workshop, the board will announce the winner(s) of the István Krompecher Prize.
